College welcomes O'Connor as chancellor
April 7 -- Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female justice on the Supreme Court of the United States, was officially invested as the College's 23rd Chancellor April 7, and President Gene Nichol was inaugurated as the College's 26th president in a joint ceremony held in the Wren Courtyard.

According to William and Mary News, approximately 4,500 people attended the inauguration and investiture.
