Gates, '65, to replace embattled Rumsfeld at Pentagon
In a speech Wednesday, President George W. Bush announced that Dr. Robert M. Gates, ’65, would replace Donald Rumsfeld as secretary of defense, pending confirmation by the Senate. Rumsfeld submitted a letter of resignation early Wednesday. The announcement comes the day after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives. Democrats and some Republicans have criticized Rumsfeld’s performance as defense secretary.
