College, JCC veto merger
A merger between the College's "Green Machine" bus system, transit buses for James City County and Colonial Williamsburg's bus system, initially brought to the community's attention last November, will not proceed, according to Mark Gettys, assistant director of auxiliary services.

"James City County and the College have mutually determined that it was not in the best interest to follow through with the merger," Gettys said.

Gettys further said that the College's main reason in declining the merger was the impact it would have on charter services. The merger would have required that groups, such as Greek organizations, could no longer charter Green Machine busses for transportation to off-campus events.

"We decided it was probably in our best interest to retain that [charter] service and privilege for the campus and certainly for student groups as well as faculty and staff groups," Gettys said.

James City County will offer semester bus passes to students who would like to use the county transit system. The passes cost $15.

Wawa to open next month
The Wawa convenience store, located on the site of the old Sentry food store across from Blow Memorial Hall, has set a tentative opening date of Sept. 24. According to Sherry Creamer, regional recruiter for Wawa, the store planned to open in August, but unforeseen construction holdups delayed the opening.

Wawa hopes to employ at least 40 people, including a number of part-time positions that Creamer hopes will go to students. The store plans to be an active participant in College life, sponsoring a football giveaway promotion and a Two-Foot Hoagie-building contest to benefit interested student groups.

"We are going to be part of the College community, not just the store on the corner," Creamer said.

The name "wawa" is from a Lenni Lenape Indian word for the Canada goose, which is featured prominently on the store's logo. Students interested in employment can contact manager Nick Mellas at (757) 897-5134.

SIN to launch redesign soon
According to Student Information Network Executive Director Armistead Booker, SIN plans to launch its redesigned website today.

"We're switching over from our personal server to the main [College] server," Booker said Wednesday, "and right now we're waiting to get the okay to make that switch happen."

As of Thursday night, server glitches had prevented the new site's launch. Booker remained optimistic that the site would be operational by the weekend.

"SIN will be up and running very soon," he said Thursday.

New features include expanded media capability and more interactive features.
