Gov. James Gilmore appointed Jeffrey Brown and Shawn Smith to the College's Board of Visitors Thursday. He also announced the reappointment of William P. Barr and Susan Magill.
"I am extremely proud of these folks and I know they will provide excellent leadership to William and Mary and serve the college community well," Gilmore said.
Brown, commissioner of the Department of Labor and Industry, manages programs dealing with the health, safety and welfare of the state's workforce. He served on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and was formerly executive director of the Governor's Commission on Citizen Empowerment.
Smith, a graduate of the College, is currently the Liaison for House Relations in Gilmore's office. He coordinates the executive branch's intergovernmental activities with the House of Delegates.
Smith previously served as a special assistant to the Secretary of Education, and was deputy director of the Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission on Higher Education.
"I look forward to working with our two new Board of Visitors members to strengthen the education we provide William and Mary students," College President Timothy Sullivan said in response to Gilmore's recent appointments.
Sullivan also welcomed back returning members Barr and Magill.
"They [Barr and Magill] have served and will continue to serve the College and the Commonwealth well," he said.
