Kissinger causes controversy

The controversy over the Board of Visitor's selection of Henry Kissinger as the next chancellor of the College became more intense this week with the February release of Harper's Magazine. The periodical contains an article by controversial journalist Christopher Hitchens who accuses the Nobel Peace Prize recipient of conspiring to commit murder, kidnapping and torturing and argues that Kissinger should be prosecuted legally as a war criminal. At the outset of the piece entitled "The Case Against Henry Kissinger, Part One," Hitchens admits that he is a political opponent of Kissinger.

Laugh Out Loud

Saturday Night Live comedian Jimmy Fallon set Phi Beta Kappa Hall on fire Jan. 26. Well, not literally, but the people in the room certainly responded as if he entered in a blaze of fireworks. The instant his head appeared from back stage, 763 bodies rose collectively to cheer him on -- and he hadn't even said a word.

Fallon said he loved the crowd's response and the chance to do stand-up comedy.

Editorial: Misplaced Priorities

Labs in Millington have been cancelled because of dangerous conditions. Rogers is a wreck, with deteriorating ceilings that endanger students. We have employees at the College who don't earn enough to live above the poverty line.

More than half of the College's peer institutions pay their faculty better than we do. The College falls far short in meeting the financial aid needs of its students.

Surf's up

People don't usually plunge into the ocean willingly during the dead of winter, but there are some students who will do it any time. Frosty temperatures and biting winds do not dissuade the College Surfing Club from taking year-round pilgrimages along the east coast to pursue surfing. Wintry weather promotes the chance of a better ride.

During the winter season, the label "extreme" is strewn along with surfing. Riding waves in the winter may seem paradoxical, even illogical, but it is possible. Besides, aggressive wintry weather brings along massive waves -- a devout surfer's playground.

REVIEWS

Fallon entertains with bum humor

Although he disputes it, Jimmy Fallon has a nice butt. Fans can't really appreciate that aspect of the comedian until they see him shaking it to the beat of George Michael's "Faith" during an impression of the British rock star. Luckily for those sitting in the back balcony seats of Phi Beta Kappa Hall, though, the 26-year-old Saturday Night Live hottie has more than a great rear end to offer his fans.

Fallon, known for his roles as a Boston teenager and a computer repair jerk in recurring skits on Saturday Night Live, entertained a group of College students who packed PBK last Friday night. With a stand-up comedy act that included songs, impressions and witty observations on the many peculiarities of young adult life, Fallon showed that he was just as hilarious on his own as he is playing off his cast members on the 25-year-old show.

Ladies beat Spiders, fall to Dukes

After a stunning upset over the University of Richmond last week, the women's basketball team came close to winning two in a row in a thrilling overtime match against James Madison University last Sunday at W&M Hall. They held the scores close until the final two seconds of the extra session, but could not come away with the victory.

The Dukes seemed to have little to worry about early on -- they accumulated a 50-38 lead by the midpoint of the second half. However, in a span of just four minutes, the Tribe went on a 16-0 tear, jumping out to a 52-50 lead. The Tribe was spearheaded by freshman Ornit Schwartz, who tallied seven of her game-high 21 points in the run.
